Lilit Amirjanyan : The Pietà

"The Pietà" has been executed by the artist many times. The inspiration came from Heaven. The deep blue-violet background represents the Universe. Mary kneels before her Son and together with the three wings behind her head she forms a Cross, the base of which is Jesus Christ. Christ's Sacred Blood flows from His wounds over the arches below; they represent the Christian Church on each of the four sides of the World. The contrasting colours emphasise the sorrow of the mother. Mary's image displays patience and obedience to God. Joined to His Will, Mary, together with the symbolic wings, makes a unity with the Sky, which extends over the whole scene. This icon is one of the 24 illuminations of the author"s Gospel Book N3. The author executed the first example of "The Pietà" in 1991, and later this image was painted for several times by her until 2005. This theme is rarely represented in the Armenian iconography.
