My name is Pauline Joseph, and I'm a London-based painter specialising in portraiture with oils. For years I pursued portrait painting but felt unfulfilled. Then in 2023, I discovered Byzantine iconography, and it transformed my artistic journey.

Captivated by its sacred beauty and timeless traditions, I dedicated myself to learning everything I could about this beautiful art form. I began with online research and reached out to a Russian gallery to better understand its nuances. With guidance from established iconographers, home studies, and purchasing essential books, I dove deep into the techniques and spiritual significance of iconography. Learning how to prepare egg tempera marked a special milestone, and becoming a member of the British Association of Iconographers (BAI) further strengthened my connection and commitment to this sacred craft.

I draw great inspiration from the Cretan School of the 15th to 17th centuries, which resonates with me due to its exquisite detail and striking colour compositions. This style deeply informs my work, and I am passionate about keeping its traditions alive in a contemporary context.

Each icon I paint is a deeply humbling and spiritual experience for me. Guided by every brushstroke, I reflect on the presence of the saints before me. This sacred process has brought mindfulness and inspiration into my daily life, encouraging me to be more thoughtful in my actions and words.

I hope the icons I create bring peace, hope, and a sense of divine connection to those who encounter them. Through this sacred art, I aim to preserve its historical significance while offering solace and compassion to the modern world.
